A note from Zoe Sinclair, the founder of Employees Matter
In early 2001 I was expecting our first baby. I was a BBC television producer and like many people I was working extremely hard to make my mark in the industry. Travelling around the world making TV programmes did not give me much time to think about my pregnancy, but as time went on I started to wonder about how my life was going to change and what would happen to my career whilst bringing up a baby too?
I turned to the professionals. I read their books and articles but questions still remained unanswered for me. And then it hit me. What if parents like me had the ability to interact with these professionals?
After reading their books, I approached and invited childcare specialists Eileen Hayes and Penelope Leach to trial some parenting seminars in a local hall one cold winters evening. Through limited advertising and mainly word of mouth, the seminars were an immediate sell-out. Like me, parents came with their unanswered questions and the experts were there to give the answers.
At the end of one of the seminars, a father came up to me and asked me if I arranged anything in the workplace? There and then he gave me his business card and told me to call him the following day. Within a month his company became my first client and Parents Matter was born offering workplace support and advice from the leading experts.
From its humble beginnings, Parents Matter has grown dramatically. To date we have delivered over 550 seminars in the workplace to over 20,000 employees. Our clients include many FTSE 100 companies as well the leading accountancy, law firms, investment banks, and management consultancies.
We are now embarking on a new direction with the re-branding to Employees Matter. This will cover not just parents but also carers and those just trying to balance their lives. With over 70 different seminars covering a huge range of topics, issues and discussions we are still keeping to our core premise- that employees have the chance to get the answers directly from the experts who know.
